Do you help your citizens or customers test for radon in their homes?  Do you later refer them to radon mitigation companies?  Now is a chance to learn what a radon mitigation specialist does in a home or business. Many of us know the science background and health effects of radon, but don’t know what happens when the mitigation company shows up and does the work.  Paul Nicholson will show us the intricacies of radon mitigation, along with some additional valuable radon background information.

How many times have you received a call where you feel stuck, unprepared, or overwhelmed with an individual’s living environment? What resources, services, and skills do you possess or have access to offer these community members? The La Crosse County Health Department has developed an innovative way to understand and help to meet the needs of the people they serve.  Many of the calls that we respond to are for filth/squalor/hoarding conditions.  Quite often, we can help work through concerns without condemning the home.  We have paired a Social Worker to respond to home visits for complaints with our Sanitarian Inspectors to address health and human hazard concerns. This unique blend of complaint response allows this team to manage each situation in a new and improved way. We hear the stories of how homes got to the state they are currently in, and look for natural supports, services, or resources to help them be successful in their space.

Opportunity to raise your voice on environmental funding!

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, which sets forth their plans for reducing the federal budget by slashing nondefense programs, including ones that support environmental public health. The Senate has yet to set spending limits for the federal budget, which means there remains much negotiation regarding the final fiscal year (FY) 2024 budget.

NEHA has submitted requests to both the House and Senate appropriators for robust funding of both FDA’s food safety programs and CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health.

NEHA encourages you to reach out to your congressional members to urge them to protect the federal environmental health programs that are vital to every state, local, tribal, and territorial environmental public health program. For your convenience, below is a draft email you can use to send to your legislators.

Thank you for your support in advocating for our profession. Your voice matters!

Dear Congressperson [Name],

Federal funding for environmental public health programs is vital to ensuring clean air and water, healthy schools, safe food, and response to climate disasters in every community.

We support FY 2024 funding of both FDA’s food safety programs and CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health at the following levels:

  • CDC National Center for Environmental Health: $300 million

  • Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry: $95 million

  • FDA Food Safety Program: $1,282 million

  • Federal and State Initiative: $140 million

Thank you for protecting our families and businesses by funding and supporting environmental public health initiatives.
